Your Aging Plan: Putting It All Together

1 min read

Most people plan for aging in pieces. A Medicare plan here, a retirement account there, maybe a will in a drawer. The pieces rarely talk to each other, and that is where families get hurt.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and Home Care and Hospice Month. Together, they point to one truth: aging is a family event, not an individual one. A complete plan answers four questions.

Who will help?

Name your caregiver and your backup before a crisis, and talk with them now.

How will care be paid for? Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care, such as help with bathing, dressing, or memory support. Long-term care insurance, hybrid life policies, and annuities can fill that gap, but most require good health to qualify. Waiting narrows your options.

Will your income last? Social Security, savings, and guaranteed income should be built to outlast you, not just carry you through the first decade of retirement.

Are the legal basics done? Powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and an estate plan tell your family what you want when you cannot say it.

Put the answers on one page. Share it. Review it every year.
