Three Risks, One Plan: Does Yours Cover All of Them?

Every financial plan is really trying to answer three questions. What happens if you die too soon? What happens if you live too long? And what happens if you get sick along the way?

Most people have answered one, usually the first, because it’s the one everyone has heard of. The other two get left for later. Later is where plans fall apart.

Dying too soon

Your income stops, but the mortgage, the kids’ expenses, and final costs don’t. Life insurance replaces that income. Term coverage is the simplest, most affordable way to carry a large benefit through the years your family depends on you most.

Living too long

A 25 or 30 year retirement is now normal, and your money has to last that long. Annuities can provide guaranteed income you can’t outlive. Permanent life insurance builds cash value you may be able to access through loans and withdrawals for emergencies or supplemental retirement income. Many term policies can also be converted to permanent coverage without new medical underwriting, which keeps your options open if your needs change.

Becoming ill

Illness or the need for care often shows up before either of the other two. Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care. Traditional long-term care insurance, hybrid life and long-term care policies, and life insurance with accelerated benefit riders can all help, and the riders let you access part of your death benefit early if you qualify.

Where it comes together

These are not three separate purchases. Some policies can address two or even all three of these risks at once. A single policy can pay a death benefit, build cash value, and offer living benefits if you become seriously ill.

The product matters less than the principle. Any good retirement plan, and any good financial plan, hits all three.

Ask yourself: If I died tomorrow, who is covered? If I live to 95, will my income last? If I need care at 75, who pays?

If you can’t answer all three, we should talk. At Laura Peery Agency, a Ramsey-Trusted Pro team, we help families build plans that answer every one.

Product features, riders, and availability vary by carrier and state. Accelerated benefits reduce the death benefit and require a qualifying condition. Loans and withdrawals reduce cash value and death benefit and may have tax consequences.
